Homeless Distillery

Well,I guess it’s time for a toxicology report. Jenn’s banana liqueur turned out excellent. It was a very sweet liqueur, just right for mixing with juices. While we were waiting on the banana liqueur to ripen, we made a batch of kahlua, excuse me, coffee liqueur. The recipe was fairly simple, and considerably faster than the banana liqueur.

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 2/3 teaspoons instant coffee

Bring to a boil, then simmer for one hour. Turn off, cover and let sit for twelve hours. Add:

  • 4 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 2/3 cups of vodka (or 1 1/3 cup everclear and 1 1/3 cup water)

This made roughly 1.25 liters of kahlua… err coffee liqueur. The cost of making it is in the neighborhood of $6 versus approximately $24 for Kahlua.

Once it was completely done… yes, about 10 am on Saturday, Jenn and I both mixed a couple of white russians, using one part everclear, one part water, two parts kahlua… err… coffee liqueur and four parts milk.

Jenn has long been of the ‘grey goose, kahlua, milk, not cream, no ice’ school of white russians, while I’m more of the ‘can you give me two since it’s last call?’ school. Both of us were quite happy with our beverages. Grain alcohol is quickly becoming my magic bullet. After the last couple of recipes, I am going to attempt to create a whiskey… details to follow.

That sounds great! We actually have a bottle of Everclear that a friend gave us as a joke. Now we can put it to some good use.

My only question is; where on earth do you store such huge bottles of booze?

Ever since we sold our house, we have had to get the “regular” bottles of booze instead of the giant Costco ones, because our rig just doesn’t have the space for ‘em any more. We used to have a full bar, now we are down to just two kinds of drinks; Bombay Saphire & tonic, and wine. Oh and beer. Ok, that’s three!

Mostly we just leave them on the counter behind the sink. When traveling, we tend to fill one side of the sink with things that shouldn’t fall over. If we have too much for the sink, I guess we can always pack them in closets etc. The year of cub scouts taught me to always be prepared. Also, they taught me that cub scout uniforms look pretty silly on a grown man.

Also, please take note that, here in Florida, 151 is the max proof available. If your friend bought you a bottle from another state, it might be 190 proof. If so, you will want to use more water and less Everclear in order to make it 80 proof vodka.

That’s not our bottle in the picture. Johnny likes to post silly pictures. We have smaller bottles.
